Courses
Grade 9 or Grade 10 Applied Mathematics (although it could be adopted for several different courses)

Reason
During my current placement, I had one or two students state that they didn’t need to learn math, or even graduate from high school to survive in the real world because they would be able to live on welfare. I decided that they needed to learn the truth about the real world so this assignment is about living on welfare. This assignment would last three or four periods and would be done in class.

Resources Required

Introduction
Due to the discussion in class of the importance of mathematics in the real world and the idea that an education isn’t required as someone could live on welfare the following assignment has been created.

Assignment
In Ontario, the colloquially titled welfare is actually called Ontario Works. Since it has been suggested that living on welfare is a viable way of life, your job is to create a budget for the next year and determine if it is possible to live on welfare. In addition to the budget for one year, you have to lay out a five year plan for long term investments or purchases such as houses, cars or anything else.

Attached you will find the 2010 Ontario Works rate chart. You will use this information as the basis for your income.

To be included in your final budget and report:
  1. any and all finances used during the year
  2. a completed income tax return for it
  3. a graph modelling your finances

Lesson Outline

Class 1
In the first class, I will outline what the class is doing. I will aid the class in creating a rubric to evaluate their projects. I will try to guide them towards including all the important headings in a personal budget, such as food and shelter, entertainment costs, taxation, and any other important expenditures.

Class 2

They will be given the handout and allowed the use of the laptops with internet access. The point of the period is to allow the students to do some structured research on the costs of living by themselves. It will also allow them to go through the process of filling out their income taxes for the first time so that they realize just how little they may end up with.

Class 3

During this phase of the project, the students will be encouraged to put together their research in a coherent report. They will be given access to Microsoft Office so that they can present their data in a mathematically relevant way.

Class 4

This would be the consolidation phase of the project. Each person would be allowed to share the results of their findings with their peers.
